002. An Accidental Temple, and Other Bits
Having just gotten familiar with Bangkok, we woke up this morning in Hua Hin.
Our last few days in the big city were spent doing a bit of admin, having a snooze and accidentally visiting Wat Arun (we got on the wrong boat but decided to roll with it); another seriously impressive temple, with especially good wallpaper. More on that later.
Deciding that we were having a boat-themed day, we caught a longboat down the river, popped into Terminal 21 Rama 3 for lunch, and then headed to Chinatown in the evening to see the run up to New Year. Lots! Of! People!
The train journey leaving Bangkok was a trip - great views, nice fellow passengers, vendors selling mango and pomelo at your seats, and an unofficial smoking section between train cars meant I had possibly one of my top ten cigarettes on an open platform as we whipped through Thai banana plantations. Downsides included Ke and I having to share a teeny tiny seat, and no air conditioning. Swings and roundabouts.
Initial impressions of Hua Hin are shaky - we worry we’ve ended up in a Thai bride hotspot. Lots (lots) of older white men accompanied by bored looking younger Thai women. We’re going to explore more today, but - worst comes to worst - we’ll use the days here to lie on the beach, recharge, and get some work done.
